Open NAT for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3

To get the best results in xbox live online in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 (MW3)  you should setup your router to allow OPEN NAT.  That just means to get the ports open and forwarded so your xbox 360 can communicate well with other XBOX LIVE users.

What happens is a request comes from xbox live to your router (let’s say through port 53).   Your router needs to know where to send this request on port 53.  By enabling this you tell your router that all request to port 53 need to be sent to my XBOX 360 on IP address 192.186.x.xxx

Xbox LIVE requires the following ports to be open and forwarded:

  • Port 88 (UDP)
  • Port 3074 (UDP and TCP)
  • Port 53 (UDP and TCP)
  • Port 80 (TCP)

Forward these ports to the ip address of your xbox on your network (usually 192.168.1.XXX)

To do this:

  1. Login to your router by typing in the ip address of your router (usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1)
  2. Find the forwarding section of your router menu  (usually called port forwarding and can be found in the QOS, NAT or Advanced Routing areas)
  3. Forward these ports from the ip address of your XBOX  360 (found in the network settings on the XBOX 360)
  4. Save settings
  5. Reboot router

Microsoft says…

NAT does not affect lag within gameplay. NAT only affects the ability to connect with other players.
